A Hermosa Beach man serving 14 years in a San Luis Obispo prison for the killing of a Lawndale resident in a drunk driving accident more than five years ago was shot after he allegedly attacked a guard in the parking lot of a medical center and tried to escape, authorities said June 12.
According to San Luis Obispo Police Lt. Larry Vizard, the escape occurred just outside Raytel Medical Imaging at 21 Santa Rosa St.
In the midst of his X-ray procedure, 33-year-old Scott Brockman attacked a prison guard accompanying him on his X-ray appointment and ran from the medical facility shortly after 3 p.m. June 11.
The guard chased Brockman, shouted at him to stop and then fired his gun twice. Brockman was struck in the back while he was attempting to scale a fence in the building’s parking lot.
The guard sustained minor facial injuries from the struggle and San Luis Obispo paramedics transported Brockman to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center where he underwent surgery. Brockman sustained a gunshot wound which entered his back and went through his abdomen, missing all major organs.
“He apparently hit the peace officer in the face numerous times, knocking him to the ground,” said Capt. Bart Topham. “After attacking the officer, Brockman ran, but the officer was still able to run after him. Some people working inside the building heard the two shots but didn’t know what they were at the time.”
Brockman is currently serving 14 years for a 1997 voluntary manslaughter conviction. He has been an inmate at the medium-security California Men’s Colony in San Luis Obispo since 2000.
A Torrance Superior Court sentenced Brockman, who had a prior record of drunk driving convictions, after he pleaded guilty to charges linking him to the 1996 death of 27-year-old Jeffrey Dodley of Lawndale.
While driving under the influence, Brockman attempted to evade the police chasing after him by sideswiping a car, running several red lights and eventually slamming into the back of Dodley’s 1984 Nissan 200SX.
Dodley’s car then exploded into flames trapping him inside. Dodley, who was a teacher’s assistant, was killed on his way home from a video store.
Vizard said he could not recall an escape like this where an inmate tried to flee while outside of prison on a medical consultation.
Police transported Brockman to the prison’s acute-care hospital June 12. Brockman could now face criminal charges for battery on a peace officer and attempting to escape.
Police are still investigating the escape attempt but said Brockman wore no restraints during the X-ray procedure.
“I can’t comment on the CMC investigation at this time because of the ongoing nature of the San Luis Obispo Police investigation,” said Vizard. “We will definitely be looking into the matter.”
