Cassandra Wilson, “Glamoured” (Blue Note Records) WHEN IT COMES TO SINGING A CLASSIC James Taylor, Joni Mitchell or Muddy Waters tune within the jazz idiom, no one does it quite like the sultry and passionate Cassandra Wilson. The singer’s latest album,Glamoured, continues to reflect her interest in breathing new musical life into older songs by using almost unrecognizable arrangements. The musical compositions just slip into the mind like a delightful dream. Wilson’s version of Bob Dylan’s “Lay Lady Lay” is sultry and mysterious. She takes the already breathtakingly sensitive “Fragile” written by Sting and makes it even more so. Wilson enlisted top talent for the project, recruiting Wynton Marsalis’ septet drummer Herlin Riley and bassist Reginald Veal, along with guitar virtuosos Fabrizio Sotti and Brandon Ross. Just like her previous albums with Blue Note, Wilson intertwines original compositions with contemporary standards to create a rare and innovative musical treat for any kind of music aficionado.
