Hermosa Beach Police Nov. 9 arrested a local man accused of drunk driving after he hit two pedestrians walking in the 400 block of Pier Avenue.
According to police, a 54-year-old woman and her 23-year-old son have now been upgraded from critical to stable condition at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center after Hermosa Beach resident, Brian Erickson, 30, hit them with his 1990 Jeep Wrangler as they walked to a nearby restaurant.
Erickson posted his $50,000 bail Sunday morning following a night in Hermosa Beach jail. Officers booked him on suspicion of felony driving under the influence and being involved in an accident causing injuries while driving under the influence.
Erickson will be arraigned Dec. 9, Hermosa Beach Press Information Officer Paul Wolcott said.
The accident occurred Saturday evening around 7:30 p.m. as the unidentified mother and son, both residents of Torrance, were on their way to Rajin Cajun Cafe located along upper Pier Avenue.
Erickson, heading west on Pier Avenue, hit them. Police are still investigating whether the victims were inside a crosswalk.
According to police, the mother suffered multiple fractures to her pelvis, and her son was the victim of a head injury and a severe compound fracture to his left leg.
Hermosa Beach paramedics tended to the victims while officers gave a preliminary alcohol screening test to Erickson at the scene of the collision after smelling alcohol on his breath. The test showed Erickson’s blood alcohol level exceeded the legal limit of 0.08 percent.
According to Hermosa Sgt. Steve Endom, based on the damage to the car and eye-witness accounts, Erickson was not speeding at the time of the accident.
Police then transported Erickson to the station for further testing and confirmed his blood alcohol level had exceeded the state limit.
Police would not release the names of the victims or the exact amount of Erickson’s blood alcohol level.
“We don’t release the names of victims involved in crimes for their own privacy,” said Endom. “As far as Erickson’s blood alcohol content, it exceed the threshold of the state limit and we have yet to determine an exact amount because the test results are still being studied.”
For a pedestrian-friendly town like Hermosa Beach, car accidents involving people walking along its streets is a very rare occurrence.
“I don’t think we have had an accident that has injured a pedestrian like this in quite some time,” said Endom.
