Hermosa Beach police recently discovered the identity of a 32-year-old Compton resident, who collapsed on the beach just south of the city’s pier Aug. 24. Because the man wasn’t conscious when found, or wearing any identification, police had no way to determine who he was.
Fernando Gonzales collapsed while jogging in Hermosa Beach at 7:55 a.m. last Saturday. Paramedics transported him to Little Company of Mary Hospital where he remains in grave condition.
According to Hermosa Beach Police Sgt. Steve Endom, witnesses saw Gonzales collapse on the beach and immediately called for help.
“Several citizens saw him go down and contacted lifeguards who performed CPR on him,” said Endom. “The man was then transported to the hospital’s intensive car unit. He is gravely ill and he collapsed due to a previous history of medical problems.”
Police found no personal information on Gonzales at the time of the incident and sought the public’s help in trying to identify him in the hopes of contacting his next of kin.
Later that same day, at approximately 7 p.m., Gonzales’ family filed a missing persons report at the Manhattan Beach Police Department. Manhattan Beach officers later consulted with Hermosa Beach police and discovered that the missing person was in fact Gonzales.
